Mexico’s Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco Marqués
informed that the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will not inject public resources into the renewal of NFL contracts to hold football matches in the country in 2020 , though he clarified that all games scheduled for 2019 would not be affected by the decision.
“It is not up to us to keep the NFL in Mexico. There will be no public resources for football matches,” he commented during a press conference. “If private investors and sponsors are interested in keeping the NFL here, then so be it,” he stated.
The statesman insisted that the match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers , scheduled for November 18 at the Azteca Stadium , would not be canceled since it has already been paid for.
“Of course, we would love to keep the NFL in Mexico, but we will be running on a tight budget next year,” Torruco added.
The Mexican government recently announced that the public sponsoring of events such as the Grand Prix Formula 1 and other internationally renowned sports events would also be canceled.
