By declaring climate change is “irreversible”, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto stressed mitigation actions cannot be postponed as this – according to the Head of State – could well be the last generation capable of stopping global warming .
In an article titled “Giving Life to the Paris Agreement,” published this Tuesday by French newspaper Les Echos , Peña Nieto said this December 12 he returns to France, together with the rest of world leaders, to reaffirm the commitment made two years ago and “face climate change together,” proclaiming the war against climate change will only be won if all nations join efforts to tackle the problem.
He emphasized that it was vital to find new financing sources, especially for developing countries, to transform their production methods and find alternative energy sources.
The President mentioned Mexico is currently working on a carbon market which “will soon be quoting in the Mexican Stock Exchange” and with other Latin American countries to “promote mechanisms for carbon credit transference.”
Peña Nieto highlighted Mexico has launched energy reforms which encourage investment in alternative energy sources that will contribute to the annulment of fossil fuel subsidies.
The President concluded his speech by stating Mexico is a highly vulnerable country, mentioning as proof of his statement the three hurricanes and numerous tropical storms which struck the country in just two months – unusual in their force and frequency.
"Mexico's position is clear: implementing the Paris Agreement to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more balanced environment for our future generations. We do this with the conviction that it is our obligation because our planet is the home of all.”
The Mexican President confirmed this was the reason why Mexico has joined the initiative of France and of President Emmanuel Macron to protect the environment.
