Last week, Mexico expressed its deep concern about the reports of an alleged chemical attack on April 7 in Douma , Syria .
The suspected chemical attack killed at least 70 people and wounded more than 1,000 in Syria’s rebel-held eastern Ghouta.
"The Mexican government reiterates its strong condemnation of the use of chemical weapons by any actor for any reason in violation of international law and international humanitarian law," read the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( SRE ).
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons ( OPCW ) chief, Ahmet Uzumcu , said it was responding with “grave concern” to the suspected chemical weapons attack outside Damascus.
So far, the OPCW’s fact-finding mission , which was already investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria’s civil war, was gathering all available material to establish whether chemical weapons were used, it said in a statement.
In the same vein, Mexico's Government stated it will remain alert to the OPCW and Security Council follow-up on this issue, as it would be "a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, human rights, and the Chemical Weapons Convention " if the attack is confirmed by the OPCW and the UN Security Council.
