The Augusta National Golf Club in the United States will open its doors to the best 72 amateur female golfers in the world, including Mexican athletes María Fassi and Isabella Fierro .
The tricolor contestants shall compete at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) competition, which gathers the female talents of golf at the global scale.
“We are honored to participate,” said Fassi in an interview with EL UNIVERSAL . “This is a great opportunity for all of us and I am very excited to play.”
The Mexican athletes lead very different lives. María is still a schoolgirl and will start a career as professional golfer in May.
The representative of the University of Arkansas is honored to participate at the Augusta after four years of success at an amateur level.
“It would be the perfect ending of this phase, though I still have a few tournaments in store. I have had some great experiences and now it is time to move on,” stated the winner of the 2018 ANNIKA Award .
18-year-old Isabella has barely enrolled in the Oklahoma State University.
The ANWA tournament, organized by Augusta National, has gathered the best ranking amateur players at the global scale. Fassi ranks in the ninth position and Fierro in the 33rd.
The first two rounds took place on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Champions Retreat Club . Those ranking among the top 30 will move on to the final round, which will be held on Saturday at the legendary venue of the Masters Tournament.
The athlete from Hidalgo commented that the sports event was a huge step towards gender equality.
“Women’s golf is growing and there are some major talents now waiting to prove themselves, though there is still a long way to go,” she stated.
