The number of workers registered in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) was of 20,063,433 last August , which is the largest number of beneficiaries to date. 86% of them correspond to permanent jobs and the other 14% were workers with temporary jobs. For the past six years, the percentages have remained relatively constant, according to the institute.
With this affiliation, around 3.8 million jobs were created during the current administration ( a total of 3,768,497 ).
This represented an increase twice as large as the one achieved during the same period of the previous administration, which reached a total of 1,938,942 affiliates , though the number of jobs created was still higher than during the previous 12 years (3,517,422) .
During the eighth month of the year, 114,189 formal jobs were generated, which is 5.3% less than the 120,643 created during the same period in the previous year, according to the variation in the number of workers subscribed to the IMSS. This decrease during the past months was mostly due to uncertainty surrounding Mexico's presidential election , as well as the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement , according to experts. However, the formal employment growth trend is expected to continue next year.
While there were 96,508 new permanent jobs during the month of August (11.1% more than the number reported in August 2017), temporary jobs only accounted for 17,681 , 47.7% less than last year .
Through a press release, the institute informed that this monthly increase in affiliated workers was 76.3% higher than the average of the past 10 years (a total of 64,775)
The annual employment growth was fostered by the telecoms and transport sectors, with 6.3% ; the farming industry, with 5.9% , and construction, with 4.9% . The states that showed the highest annual increase were Quintana Roo, Zacatecas, and Baja California Sur, with growth rates of over 7.5% .
