Mexico's National Dance Company returns to the Palace of Fine Arts with the Swan Lake ballet , of Mario Galizzi, based on the original production of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
The full ballet together with its four scenes, two acts, and one intermission – which premiered last March –will offer shows on September 26, 28 and 30, and on October 1, 3 and 5. According to the National Institute of Fine Arts, tickets have already sold out .
“I was a bit overwhelmed to hear tickets had sold-out, but I'm also glad there's been such an interest in this production. Social networks have been useful in keeping people alert on our seasons. For these shows, we have different casts. And we've rescheduled, because the premiere was a huge success and we wanted that more people came to see it,” explained during an interview Mario Galizzi , the artistic director of the company.
In this occasion, there will be 70 dancers, joined by students from the National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance. The roles of Odette and Odile will be interpreted by the same ballet dancer at each of the shows, which are none others than the prima ballerinas Ana Elisa Mena, Mayuko Nihei, Blanca Ríos, and Yoalli Sousa
This new version premiered in the Palace of Fine Arts after a shortened version of the ballet presented in the lake of Chapultepec for 40 years. The change of venue was due to the constant cancellations due to weather conditions and complaints from the general public.
The tale of the Swan Lake takes the spectator to a far-away castle where Prince Sigfrid has come of age and needs to choose a wife. However, the evil sorcerer Rothbart casts a spell on all the maids, turning them into swans by day and returning them to their human form at night. Sigfried falls in love for one such maid, Odette, the swan queen.
