During election times, candidates always bring forward proposals aimed at modifying what they consider has been done poorly. Proposing several alternatives is a practice capable of improving Mexico's development, thus it is valid and enriching.
Our country is currently in a period in which omnipotent power isn't centered only around the figure of the president. We have moved towards an equilibrium of powers and a thorough control of the measures adopted by the administration in power.
There are organizations created in the past years with the purpose of serving as “guardians” of key areas and industries, free of the influence of other authorities in its decisions. Thus, the National Human Rights Commission, the Federal Institute of Telecommunications or the Federal Economic Competition Commission are a counterweight to prevent abuses from the state or private consortia.
The only organization with any jurisdiction in the organization of the elections is the National Electoral Institute (INE). The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) doesn't consult government agencies or offices when gathering social and economic data of the country.
Another, although not less important, is the Bank of Mexico which strives to “maintain an environment of low and stable inflation.” All are independent in their operations and administration.
The autonomy granted to these institutions according to the Constitution provides them with tools for their adequate performance in favor of the country, removed from the comings and goings of politics. During an interview published today by EL UNIVERSAL, the Bank of Mexico, in the voice of its governor, has a clear objective: comply with the purpose assigned to it pursuant to the Constitution, unaffected by political cycles.
This is the greatest challenge and at the same time one of its main values: acting on the margins of administrations or political pressures. It shouldn't be understood as a straightjacket but as a guarantee of legality in strategic areas of Mexico.
Together with the supervision of international organizations, there is no better dam before the eventual excesses of future administrations than the consolidation of our autonomous bodies. Each one of the organizations, thus far, carries the image and weight they have created for themselves; a quick evaluation would approve them. They have a key decisive role in the performance of our country and them exercising their autonomy is the best way to prove it.
