The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported a general power outage in the Yucatán peninsula , and at the same time, the suspension of the distribution of potable water .
The power failure affected Yucatán , Cancún , Campeche , and Quintana Roo .
On Friday afternoon, around 3:50 P.M. the power outage took place and the CFE informed that it was working to solve the problem as soon as possible.
The outage affected essential services such as traffic lights.
Manuel Bartlett
, the head of the Federal Electricity Commission , said that a fire at a sugar cane field between transmission towers caused the outage in the Yucatán peninsula .
On Friday night, electric power returned to the Yucatán peninsula, including tourist hot spots Cancún and Tulum , after a blackout left 1.6 million customers without energy.
“Service has been 100% reestablished i n the three states thanks to the quick work of CFE workers,” the utility said in a statement.
According to the CFE , at least 85% of all clients in the three states were affected by the blackout .
Previously, on March 8 , there was another blackout in the Yucatán peninsula that seriously affected traffic and commercial activities. Back then, the CFE reported the outage only lasted around 25 to 30 minutes, although it lasted up to an hour in some areas.
