Opening of dinosaur expo in Coahuila

Last week was the grand opening of the expo: “Coahuila: Land of Dinosaurs,” which is the first of its kind in Mexico . It features 52 pieces, 18 robots, replicas, and skeletons from different species meant to display the northern state’s paleontological beauty.

At the Museum of the Desert (MUDE) ’s entrance, at the Las Maravillas Park , the dinosaur pieces were put on display along with information on their findings in the state of Coahuila .

According to scientific authorities, Coahuila is one of the world’s ten richest places in regards to fossils . It possesses protected natural areas destined to paleontological research such as the Rincón Colorado reserve , which has become a tourist destination.

Investigators from the museum have discovered 13 new species of prehistoric fauna , including marine reptiles and both terrestrial and flying dinosaurs such as the Coahuilaceratops magnacuerna , the Muzquizopteryx Coahuilensis , the Velafrons Coahuilensis , and the Geosaurus Saltillense .

The exposition also shows several types of prehistoric fish that lived alongside dinosaurs during geological times, such as the Lepidotes , whose partially digested remains were found within the stomach of the Baryonyx dinosaur.

As part of the tour, visitors may also appreciate the famous reptile Mauriciosaurus Fernandezi , often characterized by its long neck and small head, as well as the flying reptile Muzquizopteryx Coahuilensis , which is 85 million years old.

The exposition will remain open until October 2018.
