Last Friday , the online streaming platform Netflix launched “ Made in Mexico ,” its first Mexican reality show that follows the lavish lifestyle of nine members of the country’s high society.
In the first episode, viewers will be able to see some of the best-known members of Mexico’s jetset socialite, including Pepe Díaz, Shanik Aspe, Kitzia Mitre, Columba Díaz, and Carlos Girón Longoria, as well as Americans Liz Woodburn and Chantal Trujillo .
These young people are “ passionate, authentic, and sophisticated fashion lovers who know how to set trends in one of the most vibrant cities in the world,” according to a press release.
“Made in Mexico” was produced by Love Productions USA , in cooperation with Richard McKerrow, who led the 2010 reality show “The Great British baking show,” Kevin Bartel, and Brandon Panaligan .
The seemingly harmless and frivolous show has repeatedly been criticized for promoting a culture of consumerism and luxury in one of the most unequal countries in the world , with over 40% of its population living in poverty conditions .
It has also been pointed out that “Made in Mexico” is proof of the Latin country’s deeply rooted racism, since all of its characters are white , while over 60% of Mexicans have dark skin .
