National Poinsettia Germplasm Bank to be developed

For Christmas holidays, about 35 million poinsettia pots will be commercialized in Mexico , thus researchers from the Autonomous University of Chapingo ( UACh ) will develop the National Poinsettia Germplasm Bank seeking to rescue the germplasm of this plant which has more than 400 varieties .

and Armando Espinosa Flores , professors and researchers of the UACh, informed that a decree establishing the Poinsettia as Tangible Cultural Heritage of the state of Guerrero will be issued due to the cultural, religious and social importance of the poinsettia.

The Poinsettia is exported to the United States and Europe and globally it is considered a symbol of peace and harmony, therefore an initiative is being promoted to declare the flower as a symbol of peace and harmony to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO ).

The decree will be made official on December 8 , the National Poinsettia Day , by Hector Astudillo , Governor of Guerrero .
