Forming a caravan, more than 5 thousand migrants have embarked on a journey to the United States through the Mexican territory.
To the group of 2,000 Central Americans who crossed the Ciudad Hidalgo point at the Mexico-Guatemala border by force last weekend, was added another group of migrants who had become stranded in the border city.
The contingent, composed by a majority of minors and women, began their journey at 3 AM on Monday , aiming to reach the Huixtla municipality before dawn.
Under the hot sun, the migrants, mostly from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua , walked on the Tapachula-Huixtla highway carrying backpacks, blankets, and sometimes babies on their shoulders.
An LGBTQ group also joined the caravan, seeking to flee discrimination and violence in their home countries.
After walking 25 kilometers in 10 hours , the group arrived at the Huehuetán sentry, which was guarded by agents of Mexico’s Federal Police. “Yes we can! Yes we can! Viva México!” Chanted the group as they crossed the sentry before the federal agents.
The caravan is guarded by elements of Federal Police, a Civil Protection ambulance from Chiapas, and two Human Rights (CNDH) visitors .
