Mexico City and the State of Mexico partially close down the public transport system amid the public health crisis

Mexico City

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced the city will implement exceptional measures after Mexico officially entered Phase 3 of its contingency plan to fight COVID-19 .

Sheinbaum announced drivers must follow a strict calendar that doesn’t allow people to drive their vehicles once a week. However, this measure does not apply to taxi drivers , disabled people , and cargo transport .

Moreover, authorities will close 20% of the metro , Metrobus , and light rail stations. The stations closed have lower demand and now more trains will be available in the stations that are usually crowded.

Starting on April 23, 38 subway stations, 47 Metrobus stations, and 4 light rail stations will remain closed in Mexico City .

Mexico City’s bicycle borrowing system will continue operating.

In a video shared on social media, Sheinbaum said authorities will verify that non-essential businesses close amid the public health crisis.

In the video, the mayor said the city will not implement a lockdown or fines but asked people to stay home and to follow physical distancing and basic hygiene measures.

State of Mexico

Governor Alfredo del Mazo

announced that it is now mandatory to wear a face mask inside public transport and on the streets. Similarly to the measures announced in Mexico City, public transport will operate at 50% of its capacity.

In a video shared on social media, Del Mazo said the decision was made in collaboration with Mexico City.

The Governor said all non-essential activities must come to a temporary halt and said there will be fines and penalties for those who fail to follow the law.
