The adoption of biotechnology has offered many applications and advantages in Mexico’s farm production to a point where the Latin American country now has one of the most strict regulation standards in the world.
In a statement, the Mexican biotechnology company AgroBio reported that genetically modified (GM) crops had been subject for discussion for over a decade. As a result of the debate, many valuable contributions have been made in the farm sector, consolidating the development of their sustainable use and handling.
AgroBio Mexico noted that legislators, government, representatives of academia, the organized civil society and producers involved in the agrifood chain , had participated in forums all over the world at which he could observe a common ground.
The organization highlighted that Mexico had one of the best frameworks for sanitary agro-foods , as well as environmental matters , making the development, cultivation, commercialization, and consumption of genetically modified crops one of the most regulated activities in Mexico.
For this non-profit civil association, it is fundamental for the country to adhere to each international guideline regarding biotechnology such as the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, an international treaty negotiated within the framework of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) , signed and ratified by Mexico. Its purpose is to help ensure an adequate level of protection regarding the handling and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology.
The Mexican regulatory framework is made up of specific instruments, such as the Biosecurity Law of Genetically Modified Organisms (LBOGM) and the Regulation of the Biosafety Law of Genetically Modified Organisms (RLBOGM) .
