Mexican government seeks to minimize cyber-security risks

The Federal Government ensured that all the competent authorities are doing everything in their power to reduce risks regarding cyber-security , which is why there has been collaborative work between institutions in order to prevent cyber-attacks from happening, said Yolanda Martínez , coordinator to the National Digital Strategy (EDN) .

“At the government, we are doing everything we can to collaborate and cooperate with several institutions which are responsible for digitalization initiatives in order to minimize any risks associated with cyber-security,” claimed the politician.

At a press conference on the occasion of the International Internet Day , Martínez Mancilla pointed out that the recent cyber-attacks against Mexican banks Banorte, BanBajío, and Banxico , among others, were reported to authorities and are being addressed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) .

“We do some very important work in protocols, general alert, and cooperation so that all the parties involved may contribute to the process of minimizing risks,” the coordinator explained to reporters who asked about the safety of the digital financial system .

The cost of the latest cyber-attack against several Mexican banks was estimated at around 300 million pesos . Three banks were affected, as well as a brokerage house and a popular savings bank . The Bank of Mexico said that these cyber-attacks are quite common, although most of them are unsuccessful. “Several mechanisms have been established since 2010 , with the creation of our Scientific Division of Federal Police , where every agency must appoint an information security specialist. And we also have an alert mechanism,” Martínez explained.

, commented that the Office of the Attorney General has made these tools available for other institutions such as the National Electoral Institute (INE) , to prevent any risks related to the digital world.
