If you would like to learn more about rural and artisanal mezcal, you should go to the Second National Meeting of Master Mezcal Makers , which will be held on December 8 and 9 at 12:00 hours in the San Ángel Cultural Center in Mexico City . Admission is free .
Félix Hernández Monterroza, a mezcal promoter from Oaxaca
and one of the event organizers, explained that this year, around 80 mezcal producers from states such as Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla, and San Luis Potosí will be participating.
Attendants will have the oportunity to talk with men and women from the countryside. Furthermore, mezcal from different regions and wild maguey varieties will be sold at the event.
Unlike traditional fairs with commercial purposes, Mexican mezcal makers will not only offer tastings, but raise awareness among their audience regarding the culture, identity, and biological conservation of this traditional beverage.
Their aim is to let producers promote their work outside their places of origin. The event is also meant to allow mezcal makers to share knowledge of their craft.
The Second National Meeting of Master Mezcal Makers will feature a broad range of activities. On Saturday, there will be a talk on “Sustainability, the betterment of production and preservation of forest resources” at 13:30 hours . At 14:00 hours, there will be a competition and selection of the best mezcal. At 15:00, Trío Noxtli de Jaraneros will be performing.
On Sunday , a group of academics will give presentations on the subject of Denomination of Origin, Mezcal Regions of Mexico (14:00 hours) ; Mardonio Carballo and José Falconi will read poetry at 16:00 , and several mezcal makers such as Juan Sánchez, from Michoacán; Nazario Zerón and Felipe Cuenca, from Guerrero; Macario Partida, from Jalisco; Venancio Maya and Rufino Felipe, from Oaxaca; Daniel Navarro, from San Luis Potosí, and Alfredo Espidio, from Puebla, will be decorated at 18:00 hours .
Citizens are invited to attend and talk with mezcal makers about their environment and context, as well as the diversity of mezcal.
