The Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray , asked the Mexican citizens to be calm and to keep a “cool head” after American President Donald Trump said yesterday that America would probably terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement ( NAFTA ).
During an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva from Radio Fórmula, the Secretary said that if “Trump wanted to terminate NAFTA, he would've done so already instead of waiting 8 months or beginning the talks,” since that is the way Trump does business.
When interviewed by Carlos Loret de Mola, Luis Videgaray added that “the threat is not surprising. He's talking to the people who supported his campaign. We have to understand this is a process and the President is just negotiating.”
On the matter of Trump demanding funds to the American Congress to start building the border wall, Videgaray said “the wall is not a part of the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States.”
Regarding the update on the travel alert for several destinations in Mexico, the Mexican Secretary stated that “while these aren't positive news, we have to understand them as part of our relationship with the U.S.”
