If you are planning to travel from the U.S. to Mexico and you would like to bring your dog or cat along, this is what you will need to do.
First, you need to request a zoosanitary certificate for your pet at the Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA), under t he Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SAGARPA) and which is free.
In order to issue this certificate , officials will have to carry out physical inspection and verify the documents to make sure your pet fulfills are the necessary requirements:
1. Health certificate : you'll need a health certificate issued less than two weeks prior to your arrival to Mexico . It has to be issued by a vet and should be signed. It should include the owner's name and address, the date of your pet's vaccination against rabies , and the officials will inspect your pet to make sure they are healthy . Your pet should also be dewormed six months before the trip .
2. The OISA personnel will check the documents and inspect your pet to check on its mucosa, ears, temperature, skin, and hair.
3. The pet should be placed inside a carrier , without a bed or any accessory or food.
4. The owner can only transport one food portion.
5. If your pet is traveling as a shipment , check all the information provided by the airline and consider using the customs services to get your pet back.
