Google Doodle
is celebrating Mexican actress and singer Katy Jurado , in recognition of what would have been her 94th birthday, by artist Ana Ramirez , following Selena Quintanilla 's animated video and Mexican actress Dolores Del Río doodle.
Katy Jurado was born on January 16, 1924 , and she was the first Mexican and Latin American woman to be nominated for an Oscar , the greatest recognition of the North American Academy.
Born under the name of María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García , she lived her childhood in Mexico City and, although her parents opposed her making a career as an actress she began in the entertainment world in 1940 when she was just 16 years old.
His fame in Mexico began to grow thanks to her appearances in important films of the Mexican Gold Film Era, yet she never thought about becoming a celebrity in Hollywood, until director Budd Boetticher and actor John Wayne saw her in a bullfight, and Boetticher wasted no time inviting her to his next film, The Bullfighter and the Lady ( 1951 ).
Later on, Katy would be nominated for the top prize in international cinema, the Oscar, for her role in Broken Lance ( 1954 ), directed by Edward Dmytryk.
Katy Jurado did not win the statuette and was not nominated again, but she became one of the main divas of Mexican cinema. He died at age 78 , on July 5, 2002 , in Cuernavaca .
“Off-screen, Jurado was a tenacious and spirited woman who captivated everyone around her. While she was stunningly beautiful, her portrayals transcended the stereotyped, over-sexualized roles written for Mexican women at the time. Her talent at depicting a range of characters helped to expand the parts available to Mexican and other Latina actresses in Hollywood today,” concluded the Google Doodle Archive .
