Foreign universities to validate UNAM degrees

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has signed a partnership agreement with eight universities of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as with the University of Guadalajara, to validate the degree certifications of the following undergraduate courses: Business Management, Nursing, Philosophy, Physics, Civil Engineering, Mathematics, and Chemistry.

This means that, from now on, the degrees obtained by those who successfully conclude these course programs at the UNAM shall also be valid in Costa Rica, Perú, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Panama, Argentina , and by the University of Guadalajara.

The purpose of the agreement is to promote academic mobility in the Latin American region, by allowing students to study graduate programs abroad.

During the meeting, which took place in the University Cultural Center Tlatelolco, in Mexico City, the Dean of the UNAM, Enrique Graue , mentioned the road to integration is long since there are over 200 institutions of higher education; nevertheless, he claimed the agreement of this partnership was a significant step.

The agreement is part of the Program for the Cooperation and Integration of Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean, and was signed bt the University of Costa Rica, The Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, the University of Havana, the State University of Campinas, the University of Guadalajara, the University of Panama, the National University of Avellaneda, the Nacional University of Colombia, and The Association of Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean (UDUAL).

Among the challenges identified for the region were the need to strengthen English as a second language and the creation of financing mechanisms in which the governments of all countries are involved. Unlike Asia and the European Union, Latin America doesn't have a policy for financing student mobility.
