A total of 59 dolphins were found stranded on the morning of February 13 at one of the beaches of Baja California Sur .
Experts of the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, as well as members of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, informed they dispatched personnel to the area to verify early reports.
With the help of social groups and the Federal Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), authorities managed to rescue 38 dolphins , yet the cause of death of the other 21 remains unknown.
Researcher Hiram Rosales, also a professor at the Baja California Sur University, said they took samples from the dolphins to determine possible death causes.
He claimed the individuals do not show signs of an interaction with depredators, and neither does the evidence suggest they fell victim to fishing techniques. Rosales mentioned this dolphin species is found all year round in the bay of La Paz.
According to the authorities, this is the first stranding registered in 2018 . Last year, there were reports of several whale species stranded in Mexican shores.
