The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), through their news bulletin, informed that on February 9, 2018, Itzel Santiago became the first blind woman to have earned a master's degree in Music by the Faculty of Music.
Ms. Santiago obtained her degree with her master's research paper: “The duty of the professors in the teaching-learning process for the inclusion of students with visual impairments: a case study at the Music Faculty of the UNAM.”
For her investigation, Itzel interviewed two students and four graduates of the Faculty of Music with visual disabilities, as well as 30 professors.
In addition to her degree, Itzel received an honorable mention and was postulated as a candidate for the medal Alfonso Caso, the maximum recognition granted at a graduate level by the UNAM.
Her research has laid out the importance of “solving the accessibility barriers” people with disabilities encounter while studying a graduate course.
