Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo
will receive the Batuta Prize to the excellence in classical music in Mexico City next October 5 , said the organization of the prize that confirmed to EFE the attendance of the tenor, who is amidst controversy for alleged sexual harassment.
In this edition, other orchestra conductors and musicians will be awarded: Michael Nyman, Leo Brouwer, Sergio Berlioz, David Rodríguez De La Peña, Lizzi Ceniceros, Enrique Bátiz, Horacio Franco, María Luisa Tamez, Edesio Alejandro, Jorge Saade-Scaff, Venus Rey Jr, Carlos Esteva, and Irasema Terrazas .
Additionally, Daniel Lozakovich will receive the recognition Batuta Prize Promise to the young musician as a sort of incentive.
On Wednesday, Plácido Domingo was set to premiere “Macbeth ” in New York, the play with which he was to come back to an American stage after accusations of sexual harassment to twenty women , but yesterday he announced he withdrew from acting.
At the same time, the Met Opera informed that the tenor will never act again in that institution. The decision was taken after the anger of many employees due to the performance of the singer.
Since the accusations against Plácido Domingo were revealed, several institutions of classical music in the U.S., such as the San Francisco, Dallas, and Philadelphia operas , have canceled his performances, although none in Europe have taken similar measures.
Meanwhile, European arenas, among them the Palau de Les Arts in Valencia , are keeping the scheduled performances of the Spanish tenor in months to come.
The first date of Domingo in Europe is in the Zurich Opera in Switzerland , where he will act next October 13 in “Nabucco,” a concert with no changes, as informed by the spokesman of this institution to EFE.
Then, he will give a concert in Moscow on October 17 , according to his website.
