In a statement, Mexico City Hotel Association ( Asociación de Hoteles de la Ciudad de México abbreviated AHCM ) informed that 96% of the hotels report a seamless operation after the recent earthquakes, an 8.2-magnitude quake on Thursday, September 7 followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake on Tuesday, September 19 , that hit the country.
In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL , the AHCM Board of Directors explained that the remaining 4% are doing minor repairs such as painting, and replacing tiles in their facilities.
The AHCM assured that four hotels out of its 300 affiliates were closed for general maintenance without reporting any structural damage.
According to the association, every hotel is doing the proper structural evaluation to their buildings through the Mexican Chamber of Construction Industry ( Cámara Mexicana de la Industria de la Construcción abbreviated CMIC ) along with the association's own architecture firms.
“After the earthquake, hotel occupancy rate fell from 100% to 50% , in most cases, and from 80% to 40% , in others. Last week, even hotels were reported completely empty , yet on Monday the occupancy rate reached 15% ,” said the AHMC.
The occupancy rate in Zona Rosa , Juárez , Roma , Condesa and surrounding areas of Mexico's downtow n were the most affected.
AHCM expects 60% of canceled reservations for at least the next two weeks.
