In the third quarter of 2017 , Mexico's unemployment rate reached 3.6% representing about 1.9 million unemployed people , the highest rate since the fourth quarter of 2016 according to Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geograph y ( Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía abbreviated Inegi ).
On an individual basis, the states that presented the highest unemployment rate were Tabasco (6.9%), Mexico City (5.2%), Baja California Sur (4.6%), State of Mexico (4.4%), Tamaulipas (4.3%), Coahuila (4.2%), Nayarit (4.1%), and Querétaro (4.1%)
The underemployed population which reflects the underutilization of the productive capacity of the employed population reached 3.7 million people representing a 7% rate , compared to the 7.8% rate of 2016 .
In the third quarter of 2017, about 30 million people were employed in the informal sector representing a 0.4% increase compared to 2016.
