U.S. issues new travel warning to certain parts of Mexico

The U.S. Department of State reissued travel warnings for U.S. citizens who plan on traveling to certain parts of Mexico, with an emphasis on the cities of Hermosillo, Ciudad Obregón and Navojoa, all three in the northern state of Sonora.

“Sonora is a key region in the international drug and human trafficking trades. U.S. citizens traveling throughout Sonora are encouraged to limit travel to main roads during daylight hours and exercise caution on the Highway 15 corridor from Nogales to Empalme,” states the Department of State's website.

In addition, travel restrictions for government personnel have lifted for Oaxaca; however, they are restricted to tourist areas and banned from using public transportation in the state capital.

On June 21, the Department of State had banned government personnel from visiting Oaxaca due to escalating violent protests in the area.

According to the U.S. embassy, “mass demonstrations have occurred regularly in Oaxaca, Mexico. Some of the recent demonstrations have turned violent. Protestors have blocked major highways to and from the city of Oaxaca.”

In the case of Chihuahua, travel restrictions for officials and government personnel have also been lifted for several regions in the state.

And finally, travel restrictions for government pesronnel to Saltillo, Parras de la Fuente and Bosques de Montreal in the state of Coahuila have been lifted, but with certain limitations such as curfews.
