Another mayor shot to death; 6 murdered so far this year

The municipal president of Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca, José Villanueva Rodríguez, was shot to death last night, while his brother Amado Villanueva was seriously injured in the incident, marking the sixth mayor murdered in Mexico this year.

The State's attorney general's office and Ministry of Public Safety confirm that the mayor was murdered by several assailants who fled in an SUV while he and several family members enjoyed a meal at a restaurant.

The mayor died at the scene of the crime, while his brother was rushed to a hospital in the state capital of Oaxaca, around 19 miles from Ocotlán de Morelos.
