'El Chapo' claims prison guards trying to take his life

Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, which is directly responsible for the most violent cartel conflicts Mexico has ever seen, claims that authorities at the federal penitentiary where he's currently being held in the border city of Ciudad Juárez are trying to take his life.

In response to these claims, the cartel leader's team of attorneys filed for legal protection with a Chihuahua state judge, arguing that Guzmán's basic rights are being violated and that officials “are attempting to take his life by holding him in an extremely cold cell without any blankets.”

As a result, the judge has ordered prison officials to ensure that Guzmán is not exposed to extreme temperatures without proper protection.

Earlier this year in September, EL UNIVERSAL reported that according to a medical report released by Guzmán's attorneys, the cartel leader has been victim of abuse inside the prison.

The medical report also claims that Guzmán suffers from diabetes, high triglycerides and hypertension, and due to the torture he claims to be a victim of, has developed generalized anxiety disorder.
