Starting today and through December 2, Mexico City's Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera hosts the sixth biennial C40 Mayors Summit, which draws mayors from around the world to share knowledge and ideas, and reach agreements aimed at fighting and reducing climate change generated by carbon emissions.
The event is led by C40 Chair, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes, who will award Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo with the honor of being the event's new chair.
The summit gathers mayors and intellectual leaders from around the world, who, according to a message by Manera released on the C40 website, are “focused on forging a low carbon and resilient urban future.”
The Summit will take place one year after the historic COP21 climate negotiations, and will provide a global forum to highlight the progress that cities are continuing to make on climate change through local action and global collaboration.
The event will showcase the plans and commitments of C40 mayors and cities ahead of 2020, when global emissions are expected to peak.
Mayors and cities are essential to achieving the ambition of the Paris Agreement, and C40 cities, which represent more than 600 million people and 25% of global GDP, have a particularly important role to play.
Previous C40 Mayors Summits have been held in Johannesburg (2014), Sao Paulo (2012), Seoul (2009), New York (2007) and London (2005).
