Siemens has built a reactor that converts hydrogen to environmentally friendly methanol-based fuel as an alternative to traditional gasoline and diesel and as a way to help reduce air pollution in Mexico.
In Mexico, 20.4% of air pollution comes from toxic emissions released by the country's transportation sector. In fact, the UN-Habitat estimates that personal cars alone contribute to 18% of CO2 emissions in the country.
Furthermore, each year, there are 14,700 premature deaths linked to air pollution in Mexico, according to the World Health Organization.
Siemens' “Green Liq” project aims to produce environmentally friendly fuel and reduce overall air pollution in the country.
Green Liq uses hydrogen to produce the environmentally friendly fuel, which releases no toxic contaminants into the environment.
Another of the reactor's advantages is that it reduces exhaust gas recirculation by simplifying the process and it also reduces the loss of thermal energy during the process.
