Nine Mexican restaurants were voted among the best according to the Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants 2016 list, with Pujol, in Mexico City, placing fifth on the list, the highest for Mexican restaurants.
“The greatness of Mexican cuisine is recognized around the world,” tweeted President Enrique Peña Nieto on his Twitter account.
For the second year in a row, Mexico was chosen to host the gala honoring the best in Latin American cuisine. The ceremony was held on Monday night at the Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center in Mexico City.
Quintonil placed sixth on the list, and other restaurants on the list were Biko, Sud777, Nicos and Dulce Patria all of which are in Mexico City, as well as También Amaranta in Toluca, Pangea in Monterrey and Corazón de Tierra in Valle de Guadalupe.
The Chefs' Choice Award, which is sponsored by Mexican brewery Cerveza Modelo, was also won by a Mexican chef: Guillermo González Beristaín from Pangea in Monterrey. Created in 2013, the list “presents an annual barometer of cuisine, generated by the votes of over 250 independent experts from Latin America.”
