Over 4,000 cases of torture reported in only six months

The Attorney General of Mexico (PGR) has investigated over 4,000 cases of torture in only six months.

Since inaugurating its Special Unit on the Investigation of Torture, the PGR has reported 4,526 cases and the arrest of only five soldiers of the Mexican Army and members of the Federal Police.

These arrests were made after a video was shared on social media in April 2016, where three Federal Police officers and two soldiers can be seen torturing a 21 year-old woman on February 4, 2015 in Ajuchitán, Guerrero.

The woman can be seen being interrogated by a female in military uniform, who cocks her rifle and then holds the weapon to the victim's head. Then, another person in Federal Police uniform ties her hands, places a plastic bag over her head and finally strangles her by the neck.

The PGR said an investigation is underway and it was a state judge from the town of Iguala, Guerro, who issued the respective arrest warrants.

Renato Sales, National Commissioner of Security, and Salvador Cienfuegos, Minister of National Security, issued an apology for the torture carried out by the federal agents.

During this six-month period, federal courts have issued a total of 14 arrest warrants for crimes of torture, which have yet to be carried out.
