Another member of the ethnic Tzotzil group has been arrested by the state police for the killing of the mayor of San Juan Chamula, Domingo López González, and four of his aides, according to the authorities.
The suspect was identified only as "Juan" in a press release and is the seventh detainee for the killings last Saturday. The suspects are in a state prison in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
López González, alderman Narciso Lunez Hernández and aides Miguel López Gómez, Ernesto Pérez Pérez, and Silvano Hernández Díaz were beaten and shot to death.
Also, other 15 people were wounded.
In the morning that day, hundreds of members of the Tzotzil ethnic group arrived at the area of San Juan Chamula to ask López González for US$2.6 million in grants for public works and artisans. But somehow things got out of control and the mayor was killed.
