More than 720 properties are illegally occupied in Cuauhtémoc district in Mexico City, Ricardo Monreal said.
The head of Cuauhtémoc district explained that the properties are either occupied by armed criminal gangs or by people that obtain insider information from the Public Registry or with connections with political parties.
Without offering further details about the location of the properties, he explained that apartments, houses, buildings and properties that are intestate, abandoned or under legal dispute are used to commit unlawful acts.
"They have even become a business for corrupt leaders who have illegally accumulated properties. I will not be an accomplice of criminals,” Monreal said.
He added that he will demand publicly and in writing to abandon or clarify the legal situation of the 720 properties.
Despite the criminal complaints and threats against him, Monreal made it clear that no one will stop him.
He added that if anything happens to him or his family, the Asamblea de Barrios, particularly the González y González brothers, are to be blamed, as well as the politicians who protect them.
