Between January 1, 2011 and February 13, 2016 1,872 girls aged between 10 and 17 years went missing in Mexico City. This means that every 5 hours a girl goes missing in the capital city.
A sampling made by EL UNIVERSAL found that 87 percent of the missing girls had long hair at the time of his disappearance and 71 percent were dark-skinned.
Also, two out of every three girls were slim and less than 1.60 meters (5.2 feet) high, which makes them easy victims in the event of an enforced disappearance.
Human rights activists fear that these girls could be victims of crimes such as sexual exploitation, human trafficking and child pornography.
Teresa Ulloa, regional director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women and Girls for Latin America and the Caribbean, said that given that the missing girls share physical traits, they could be victims of organ trafficking.
According to figures provided by Mexico City Development Department 440 girls have gone missing in Iztapalapa, followed by Gustavo A. Madero with 218 disappearances, Cuahtémoc (149) and Álvaro Obregón (124).
