Nephew of former Mexican governor killed

Mexican authorities reported the killing in Colima of Samuel Rodríguez Moreno, nephew of former governor Fernando Moreno Peña, and a suspect for the killing of another former governor, Silverio Cavazos, in November 2010.

Rodríguez Moreno was in a tire repair shop at 3:30 p.m. when armed individuals arrived at the place and shot at him.

The area was cordoned by security personnel and his identity was confirmed hours later.

In November 2011, a year after the murder of Cavazos, then State Attorney Yolanda Verduzco Guzmán pointed out Rodríguez Moreno as one of the masterminds behind the killing.

Based on the testimonials of one of the detainees after the murder of Cavazos, she also accused Moreno Peña of being a strawman for Gerardo Mendoza Chávez, an alleged leader of the "La Familia" cartel in Colima and who ordered the execution of the former governor.

Rodríguez Moreno denied all the accusations against him and on 2014 the authorities reported that the investigations against him continued.

Last October 12, former governor Fernando Moreno Peña was attacked by armed individuals while having breakfast. Despite four impacts in his body he managed to survive the attack.

Although the attackers have been identified, they remain on the lam and so far there are no explanations on the reasons behind the attack.
