Due to the Zika virus outbreak in the Americas, the government of Chiapas conducts an operation against the infected mosquitoes on the southern border, reported the state health authorities.
The State Health Department has confirmed 13 cases of Zika and 18 more still unconfirmed.
The operation began on Friday with over two thousand volunteers supported with vehicles, who are fumigating and eliminating potential breeding sites.
State Health Secretary, Francisco Javier Paniagua Morga, recognized the vulnerability of the southern border for being a migratory flow area from Central and South American countries, which are the most affected by the virus.
The most common symptoms of of Zika infection are: fever, rash, join pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The disease is usually mild and lasting for several days to a week. One in five people infected become ill or notice the symptoms.
Zika virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These are the same mosquitoes spreading dengue and chikungunya viruses. The mosquitoes typically lay they eggs in standing water like: glasses, bowls, animal dishes.
