Police investigations found that around 30 Mexican citizens obtained false Ecuadorian identity documents and that among them could be Mexican drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán and two minors, allegedly his relatives.
In recent years, the Ecuadorian police dismantled three organized crime gangs, where one of the members was an official of the Civil Registry of the province of Manabi, who provided the information about the identity theft.
"According to the information received by the police, around 30 Mexican citizens received fake identification documents about 10 years ago and one of those individuals could have been Joaquín "El Chapo” Guzmán and two minors allegedly linked with Guzmán" Interior Minister of Ecuador José Serrano said Thursday.
The minister added that "the government has dismantled the support structures of the Sinaloa cartel in Ecuador."
