Mexican drug trafficker Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán supposedly was wounded in the face and leg during a confrontation with Marines in the Sierra Madre during the first week of October, according to U.S. network NBC.
According to the report, he was in a ranch in the area when the federal forces tried to arrest him. But, Mexican security sources were unable to confirm the information when consulted by EL UNIVERSAL.
NBC reported that Mexican helicopters converged on the ranch and were met with gunfire and fell back, with the military entering the area on foot, but they found that Guzmán and his accomplices had escaped.
They discovered drugs, cell phones and two radios during the operation, according to NBC.
The governor of Sinaloa, Mario López Valdez, confirmed a series of military operations in the mountainous area of that state of northwestern Mexico and neighboring Durango, looking for Guzmán Loera.
Also, 13 communities in the region have been caught in the crossfire between criminals and the federal forces, forcing the displacement of more than 260 people to the area of Cosalá, according to local mayor Samuel Zacarías Lizárraga.
