Sigifredo Nájera Talamantes, known as “El Canicón” and a prominent member of the “Los Zetas” cartel, died in the federal prison of "El Altiplano," in the municipality of Almoloya, in the State of Mexico.
According to the Federal Police, he died of a respiratory failure.
The National Security Commission reported that he felt upset in the morning and was taken to the prison's hospital for a medical emergency.
"El Canicón" was arrested on March 20, 2009, for drug-related crimes, cocaine and military-grade weapons possession.
Sigifredo Nájera was considered one of the most influential members of “Los Zetas” and headed the gang in the cities pf Nuevo León and Coahuila.
He was arrested in Saltillo, Coahuila, along other six people.
