The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) confirmed the death of two Mexicans in a "serious incident in Egypt, in circumstances that are not clarified yet" and caused the death of a group of tourists, among them an undetermined number of compatriots.
International news agencies report that 12 people were killed in the incident, some of them Mexicans and the others Egyptians, without providing numbers.
They also report that they were shot dead by armed forces during an anti-terrorist operation.
"The Ambassador of Mexico in Egypt, Jorge Alvarez Fuentes and consular personnel are in the Dar-el-Fouad Hospital, in a suburb located west of Cairo, to aid the affected nationals. Ambassador Alvarez Fuentes has been with five of the Mexicans at the hospital and they are stable," reported the Ministry in a release.
