The Mexican Minister of the Interior, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, said that he will not resign to his post after the escape of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, "El Chapo," from the maximum security jail of El Altiplano last Saturday.
“The moments of crisis are not to resign, but to face them. A very delicate event has happened and we have to investigate, sanction and recapture this criminal," said Osorio Chong to the media, while presenting a report on the actions to arrest and stop the leader of the Pacific Cartel.
Osorio Chong reported that he terminated the mayor of the jail, Valentín Cárdenas Lerma, as well as the National Coordinator of Federal Social Readaptation Centers and the head of the Prevention and Social Readaptation Agency, who are under investigation to see if they were involved in the escape.
Acompanied by the head of the National Security Commission, Monte Alejandro Rubido, and Attorney General Arely Gómez, Osorio Chong expressed that El Altiplano operates under all the security standards and even has the certification of a foreign company.
“We had all the needed precautions for such an important criminal. (But, El Chapo) did something extraordinary which broke with all the paradigms of security for any jail in the world," he said.
