Former world super bantam champion Juan "Dinamita" Estrada was knifed to death in the city of Tijuana, according to the authorities.
Preliminary investigations indicated that someone intercepted 51-year-old Estrada's car and assaulted him. The reasons for the attack remain unknown.
The body of the former champion of the World Boxing Association (WBA) remains in the morgue of Tijuana.
Estrada won the WBA title in the 80s and became the first boxer from Tijuana to win a universal title.
Estrada debuted at 20 years of age and ended his career with record of 36 wins, with 30 KO and 11 defeats. He retired with a defeat before Francisco Valdez on May 13, 1994, in his native Tijuana.
