The National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua) reported that storm "Carlos" evolved into a hurricane category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center, with headquarters in Miami, said that the hurricane vortex was some 140 miles south of Acapulco, and "Carlos" presents maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.
Meteorologists said that "Carlos" is traveling at barely two miles per hour.
The government of Mexico issued a hurricane watch from Lázaro Cárdenas to Punta San Telmo, which means that there may be effects of the hurricane within that region in 48 hours.
A tropical storm warning was in effect from Tecpan de Galeana to Lázaro Cárdenas, while another tropical storm warning was in effect from east of Tecpan de Galeana to Acapulco.
